How important is building muscle in menopause?

It's very important to work on building your muscle tone and strength in menopause, because muscle mass declines as we get older, and its place is taken by - fat.
Building more muscle can give you a sleeker, more toned body and make you stronger, which in turn helps you to stay active and independent until later in life. Muscle has another benefit too. Even when resting it burns more calories than fat, so the more muscle on your body, the more calories you can burn, and the fewer there are to be turned into flab.
The best way of building muscle in menopause is to do strength training exercises 2-3 times a week.
